Why the Catholic Archbishop of Cape Coast resigned
Many questions have been asked about reasons surrounding news of the resignation of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Reverend Matthias Kobena Nketsiah.

According to the Catholic Canon Law (the statute that governs the Catholic church), priests and bishops retire from active pastoral service at the age of 75 and that is termed as ‘resignation’ according to the law

This, therefore, confirms that Most Reverend Matthias Nketsiah born on April 14, 1942, at Kakomdo in the Central Region attained the mandatory 75 years and was required to officially submit his resignation to the papacy that has been accepted by Pope Francis the 266th current Pope and sovereign of the Vatican City State.

By Archbishop Nketsiah’s ‘resignation, he joins the league of Emeritus Bishops/Archbishops of the church.

Born on April 14, 1942 at Kakomdo in the Central Region, Most Reverend Matthias Kobena Nketsiah was ordained Priest of Cape Coast on July 19, 1970 at the age of 28 by then Bishop Peter Kwasi Sarpong in his capacity as the Bishop of Kumasi, and rose through the rank to become the Archbishop of Cape Coast.

Most Rev. Matthias Nketsiah, who was until his appointment the Apostolic Administrator, and replaced Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson who was also appointed the President of the Pontifical Council for Peace and Justice in Rome, Italy.

He held various positions including the Chairman of the Department of Juridical Matter of the Episcopal Conference.

He completed both his Ordinary and Advanced Levels at the St. Theresa’s Minor Seminary at Amisano, and continued his Philosophy and Theology studies at St. Peter’s Major Seminary in Pedu, Cape Coast.
